The back lane heaved with familiarity
the bottle tree passed by,
leaving me to meet the wire fences and metal gates keeping
the voices and faces at arm's length
The light from the main street
had left me to fill in the blanks—
The moon was needed elsewhere that night
It hadn't seemed important
