Checkmate subverts the use of an at-home infidelity test kit, of the same name, to mark sites of queer sexual resistance in Sydney and visualise the act of cruising. The kit tests for the presence of semen, a purple stain appearing when testing positive. Predominantly in search of sex and usually anonymous, cruising can and does occur almost anywhere. Specific sites in the modern metropolis do lend themselves to such an action more than others, with toilets a pragmatic palace for many and parks acting as cornerstones for al fresco frissons.The series sees fluids flung and truths emerge. As an infidelity test kit is repurposed and eroticised, our desires are laid bare.
